About

About KOYOMI Lab

Things that will always be needed, as the calendar turns.

The name

KOYOMI means “calendar”

The koyomi, the calendar, has marked the rhythm of daily life as the seasons change. The name KOYOMI Lab carries a wish: to make things that stay close to people’s lives, and are needed not only today but for years to come.

Designer

Ayumu Sorakawa空川歩夢

I’m an independent designer based in Japan. What interests me is structure: how traditional Japanese objects are made, and how familiar everyday things have taken root in modern life. I pare these elements down to their essentials and rebuild them for the modern desk.

Approach

My approach to making

  1. Everything designed from scratch

Every model is an original design, not a remix.
I take inspiration from beautiful shapes I find in everyday life, shape the idea in rough sketches, and design it from scratch in CAD software.

  2. Shapes made for 3D printing

Minimal supports. Seams that are hard to spot.
For a beautiful finish, I work backward from the printing process to design the optimal shape.

  3. Down to the parts you can’t see

Every KOYOMI Lab model is something I hope you’ll keep using for years to come. That’s why I don’t cut corners, even on the underside or the inner structure.
It feels natural in your hand, and sits on your desk as if it had always been there.
